Cleaning Your Piano

- spillages – can cause serious damage to the components and cabinet
- direct sunlight – causes the finish to fade
- plants – can tarnish the finish from the acidic leaves / petals
Maintenance Tips
Modern and Contemporary Pianos
New pianos tend to be finished in polyester or satin lacquer, to keep it clean use a damp microfibre cloth and dry with a second microfibre cloth. This ensures your piano doesn’t become surface scratches from tiny pieces of dirt / dust. No polish is needed.
Traditional and Vintage Pianos
Older pianos need more care than modern day pianos; the most common finish being French polished. To clean your vintage instrument apply a good quality polish reviver with one cloth and then polish off with a second cloth to restore the sheen.
Moisture can cause problems as the wood draws in moisture, this will make the piano sound differently and damage your instrument.
Do not place your piano in a location that is too hot or too cold. The wood will expand in the heat and contract in the cold, which causes tuning issues and deterioration.
If you play your instrument regularly, general wear and tear with the components will increase with use. Tuning is recommended every 6 months to keep your piano sounding its best.
Keep up with routine maintenance to regulate your piano’s action and keys, this will help preserve the sound and lifespan.
